How do Clesana toilets work?

Clesana toilets are very different to traditional caravan and camping toilets.

They are engineered and manufactured in Switzerland to solve the common frustrations of cassette and composting toilets. This means they operate on a completely different principle.

Clesana doesn't flush, it seals.

Instead of storing waste in a tank, Clesana seals it in medical-grade barrier film. Waste gets thermo-sealed into an airtight pouch that traps all odours (yes, it's been tested).

No smell.
No water.
No chemicals.
No dump points.
No separating liquids from solids.

Clesana C1 and X1 sealing toilets for caravans — no water, no chemicals, no dump points

How It Works: Step by Step

Clesana comes in two form factors, both using the same patented thermo-sealing technology.

  • Clesana C1 Toilet is designed to be permanently mounted in your caravan or off-grid bathroom. It runs on 12V, mounts to the floor with a swivel base, and easily retrofits into most caravan bathrooms. It is suitable as a drop in replacement for most RVs toilet such as; cassette style toilets, composting toilets, separating toilets, etc...
  • Clesana X1 Toilet is the portable version, using the same sealing mechanism as the C1. It's compact, supports multiple power options, and goes wherever nature calls you; free camping over a long weekend, fishing on the tinny or keep it in your vehicle for the 'just in time' moments.

Both seal waste the same way. Here's how the process works.

1. Load the high barrier liner

Clesana high-barrier foil liners start as a long continuous tube which is folded into an open ring.

The liner mounts onto the toilet's holding frame. Once mounted you feed some of the liner into the toilet bowl where it is transported to the sealing mechanism.

A seal cycle is initiated to seal the ring and create a large leak-proof bowl.

This process is easy and doesn't require tools. It takes about 30 seconds.

Each liner lasts an average of 50 sealed bags (conservatively), so you load it once and you're set for weeks before needing a new one.

2. Use it like a normal toilet

The liner creates a large, deep bowl — similar in size to a standard domestic toilet. There's no need to 'aim' liquids to the front and solids to the back. No separate container for toilet paper. Everyone in the family uses it the same way, including kids.

3. Seal it, when you're ready.

You don't have to seal after every single use. You decide when to seal and how large of a bag you want the toilet to create.

This means you control how much liner you use.

After a number two? We recommend sealing it straight away.

For wees, we've created accessories and consumables that let you use the toilet multiple times before deciding to seal. That means you don't have to use liner every time, reducing ongoing operating costs.

Super Absorbers

Drop a super absorber sachet into the bowl after a wee. It locks away liquid and traps odour. Combined with the lid closed, you won't smell a thing — even overnight.

Here's what a typical overnight scenario looks like:

9:00 pm Wee, then add super absorber No seal
1:00 am Wee No seal
8:00 am Wee No seal
8:45 am Morning bowel movement Seal

That's four toilet uses on a single sealed pouch.

Liquid Insert

The liquid insert is an optional holding tank that locks into the toilet bowl. It collects liquid so you can use the toilet multiple times before emptying the container.

Again, meaning you don't have to seal every time you use the bathroom. This is especially useful for young families and people who need to go to the bathroom frequently.

The funnel cover prevents splashing on corrugated roads and winding tracks.

patented thermo-sealing element heat-seals the liner below the waste, creating a sealed pouch. The bag will separate from the rest of the liner and drop down into the holding tray. The next section of liner automatically feeds into position, ready for the next use.

4. Easy & Hygienic Disposal

Once the sealing cycle is complete, the bag drops into the holding tray ready to remove. Dispose of it responsibly — just as you would a nappy or a doggy poo bag.

The multi-layered barrier liner is leakproof and odourless, so you can dispose whenever it suits you. Most customers buy Clesana bio liners, to further reduce their environmental impact.

That means no detours to the nearest dump point, and no cutting a good day short because the cassette is full. No waiting for a composting toilet to actually start composting. No chemicals to buy or pour away. No chemical cocktails. Use it, seal it and move on with your day.

And because nothing accumulates inside the toilet, maintenance is the same whether you've been on the road two days or twelve months. Pull out the bags, wipe down the seat, done.

You no longer need to dread the end of the trips. It's a toilet you'll actually want to use.
