Frequently Asked Questions
Can I discard the sanitary bags in green/organic waste bins?
No. Sanitary bags must be placed in your general waste (red lid bin). The Clesana
C1 is a chemical-free toilet and uses barrier film to hygienically seal
waste, which is not compostable and should not go in green bins.
Can I discard the sanitary bags in my general waste (red bin)?
Yes. These sealed sanitary bags are designed for safe disposal in household rubbish, unless your local council specifies otherwise.
Are the sanitary bags odour-proof?
Yes. At room temperature, the bags remain odour-proof for 2–4 weeks. In hotter
conditions (above 30°C), we recommend disposal within 48 hours.
Is the toilet ready to use again straight after flushing?
Yes, once the sealing cycle is complete, the toilet is ready to use again. Opening
the lid mid-cycle may cause malfunctions.
Can the C1 handle more than human waste?
Yes. The C1 can hygienically seal feminine products, nappies, and even food scraps —
making it ideal for off-grid and caravan toilet use. Avoid inserting sharp objects or hot ashes, and don’t exceed the fill line.
Is the toilet 12V only?
Yes. The Clesana C1 waterless toilet operates on 12V DC. It is not compatible
with 240V mains power unless a validated converter is used.
Can I use a bin liner or waste bag inside the sanitary bag compartment?
You can, but it's optional. Some users prefer it for extra hygiene. We recommend a reusable or sealable container if desired.
What is the weight capacity of the toilet?
The C1 supports up to 150kg when the lid is closed.
Can I retrofit the C1 into toilets like the Thetford C260?
Yes. The C1 is a great cassette toilet alternative and can replace many existing models. The Thetford C260 is directly compatible with an L-adapter. Other layouts may require minor modifications — see our install guide or speak with a certified installer.
Can the C1 be connected to 240V mains power?
Not directly. The C1 requires a validated converter for mains use, and none have been certified for long-term 240V operation at this stage.
Can I power the toilet with a battery?
Yes. The C1 can be powered by a mobile 12V battery system. It’s not a portable toilet
in the traditional sense, but a fixed, battery-compatible unit suitable for mobile setups.
Is the C1 portable?
No. The C1 is a fixed waterless toilet system. It must be securely mounted for correct and safe operation.
What is the expected lifespan of the C1?
Built from commercial-grade plastic and components, the toilet has been tested to
over 22,000 cycles. The Teflon belt — the only wear part — lasts ~1,500 uses and is replaceable.
DoI have to seal the bag after every use?
No, not always. You can use the toilet multiple times per bag as long as you don’t exceed the fill line. For maximum hygiene, sealing after each use is recommended.
Is the absorber powder required?
Not required, but helpful. The absorber turns liquids into gel for easier handling and better hygiene — especially when using the same bag overnight.
